Dunn Loring–Merrifield is the first station east of the Vienna terminus on the Orange Line, serving the Merrifield neighborhood of Fairfax County, Virginia. The station opened on June 7, 1986 as part of the same Orange Line westward extension that reached Vienna.
The station's name reflects its dual identity: the historic Dunn Loring community to the north and the Merrifield area to the south, which has undergone significant redevelopment in recent decades. The Mosaic District — a popular mixed-use development with restaurants, retail, and a cinema — opened adjacent to the station in 2012 and dramatically increased ridership.
