Shaw–Howard U station opened on January 13, 2001, as part of the Green Line extension into one of Washington DC's most historically significant neighborhoods. - Howard University is best reached by bus from this station — take the 70 or 79 Metrobus on Georgia Ave NW, just 1–2 stops to the Howard campus. Walking takes about 10–12 minutes along 8th St NW and then Georgia Ave.
- The 9:30 Club is one of DC's premier live music venues and hosts major national and international acts. It's about a 7-minute walk from the station. Check their calendar in advance as shows often sell out. The Lincoln Theatre and Howard Theatre both also host major concerts nearby.
