About Navy Yard–Ballpark Station
Navy Yard–Ballpark Metro station opened on December 28, 1991, as part of the Green Line extension into the Capitol Hill/Navy Yard area of Southeast DC. Originally named simply "Navy Yard," the station was renamed on November 3, 2011 to include "Ballpark" following the opening of Nationals Park immediately adjacent to the station — one of the closest stadium-to-subway connections in American professional sports.
The station sits at the heart of the Capitol Riverfront neighborhood, one of Washington DC's most dramatic urban transformations of the 21st century. Once a largely industrial and government-facility district centered on the historic Washington Navy Yard — the oldest shore establishment of the US Navy, active since 1799 — the neighborhood has been reinvented as a vibrant mixed-use waterfront district with thousands of new residential units, restaurants, hotels, and office buildings.
The Anacostia Riverwalk Trail connects the station to Anacostia to the south and to the Southwest Waterfront and The Wharf to the north, making Navy Yard–Ballpark a hub for cyclists and recreational users exploring DC's emerging riverfront corridor.
Lines & Schedule
Peak service (Mon–Fri 5–9:30am, 3–7pm): every 10–12 min. Off-peak and weekends: every 15–20 min. On Nationals game days the station and platform are much busier around first pitch and after the final out. Last train shortly before midnight Sun–Thu, ~2:00am Friday–Saturday nights. - On Nationals game days, arrive at least 30 minutes before the scheduled first pitch to avoid post-commute rush overlap. Post-game crowds can make outbound trains very crowded — consider waiting 20–30 minutes after the game ends in the restaurant district before heading to the platform.
- Capital Bikeshare has a large dock near the station. The Anacostia Riverwalk Trail provides a direct cycling route both south toward Anacostia and north toward The Wharf and the National Mall, making this station a great starting point for a riverfront ride.
- The Capitol Riverfront neighborhood has expanded significantly with new restaurants and bars on Half Street SE, First Street SE, and along the waterfront. Dinner reservations before Nationals games are popular — book ahead on game nights.
- There is no Metro parking at this station. Private parking garages in the Capitol Riverfront area charge $25–$40 on game days. Taking Metro is strongly recommended for Nationals games and any visit to the area.

What time does Metro run after Nationals games?
Normal Metrorail hours apply on game nights: Green Line trains run until around midnight Sunday to Thursday and until 2:00am on Friday and Saturday nights. Can I visit the Washington Navy Yard from this station?
The Washington Navy Yard is an active military installation and access requires a valid DoD ID or a sponsored visitor pass. The Navy Museum, located inside the Yard in Building 76, is open to the public but requires advance registration. Use the New Jersey Avenue SE exit and follow signs to the visitor entrance on M Street SE. Check the Naval District Washington website for current visiting procedures.
